Enrolled Agent vs CPA: Key Differences in Licensing, Services, & When to Choose Each
If you’re deciding whether an Enrolled Agent or another tax professional is the best fit for your situation, it can help to understand how credentials compare. Explore our EA vs CPA guide to see how Enrolled Agents and Certified Public Accountants differ in licensing, scope of services, and ideal use cases.
What is an EA?

An Enrolled Agent (EA) is a highly trained, tested, and continually educated tax professional. An EA has technical expertise in the field of taxation and is empowered by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to represent taxpayers before all administrative levels of the Internal Revenue Service for audits, collections, and appeals. Only Enrolled Agents, attorneys, and CPAs may represent taxpayers before the IRS.
The Enrolled Agent credential is an elite credential issued by the IRS to tax professionals who demonstrate special competence in federal tax planning, individual and business tax return preparation and representation matters.
“Enrolled” means to be licensed to practice by the federal government, and “Agent” means authorized to appear in the place of the taxpayer at the IRS. The EA license is earned in one of two ways, by passing a comprehensive examination which covers all aspects of the tax code, or having worked at the IRS for five years in a position which regularly interpreted and applied the tax code and its regulations. All candidates are subjected to a rigorous background check conducted by the IRS.
In addition to the stringent testing and application process, the IRS requires Enrolled Agents to complete continuing professional education on an ongoing basis to maintain their Enrolled Agent status. Enrolled Agents are required to abide by the provisions of the Department of Treasury’s Circular 230, which provides the regulations governing the practice of Enrolled Agents before the IRS.
The enrolled agent logo is more than a symbol, it’s a powerful trust signal that sets you apart in a crowded tax marketplace. To learn more about the meaning, history, and proper use of the enrolled agent logo, visit our enrolled agent logo page.
What is a CFP?

The CFP® (CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™) is the recognized standard of excellence for personal financial planning. It is the financial planning certification most sought after by consumers and financial planners alike.
The CFP® certification process, administered by CFP Board of Standards, identifies to the public that those individuals who have been authorized to use the CFP® certification marks in the U.S. have met rigorous professional standards and have agreed to adhere to the principles of integrity, objectivity, competence, fairness, confidentiality, professionalism and diligence when dealing with clients.
CFP® certificants must pass the comprehensive CFP® Certification Examination, pass CFP Board’s Candidate Fitness Standards, agree to abide by CFP Board’s Code of Ethics and Professional Responsibility which puts clients’ interests first and comply with the Financial Planning Practice Standards which spell out what clients should be able to reasonably expect from the financial planning engagement. To maintain certification, license holders are also required to complete continuing education requirements on an on-going basis.
Understanding the CFP® designation is an important first step. To see how CFP® professionals compare with other financial advisors in terms of training, standards, and scope of advice, visit our CFP vs financial advisor comparison page.
What is a RFC?

What is a CF2?

CF2 is a professional designation for financial professionals, namely, those who have successfully completed a rigorous certification and training process established by NACFF and The American Financial Education Alliance (AFEA), and who agree to uphold the highest moral, ethical and fiduciary standards of service when providing advice to potential or existing clients.
The National Association of Certified Financial Fiduciaries (NACFF) was created to provide all the information, tools, and resources needed for financial professionals to ensure they are compliant with fiduciary standards.
